Making pieces of the Internet.

I create web applications

  • Client-side—
    • for both standard browsers and mobile devices,
    • with rich and responsive interfaces,
    • attention to visual design detail,
    • and incorporating the latest web standards.
  • Server-side—
    • everything from content management to real-time user interaction,
    • using a transparent, iterative approach to ensure priorities are clear,
    • and providing a special focus and expertise leveraging web service APIs.

I build effective teams

  • Technology and subject-matter experts—
    • with key skills appropriate to a particular context,
    • whose expertise can leveraged a small amount to provide a great deal of value,
    • and who can come together to form effective, project-specific teams.
  • Developers & designers—
    • from previous projects or newly identified,
    • from within a client or partner organization,
    • or wherever appropriate talent can be found.
  • Organizations—
    • that need long-term but potentially limited volume services in a specific area,
    • or that are looking to build in-house capacity over time.

I use the right tools

  • Open source—
    • well-established projects like jQuery, Node.js, Appcelerator Titanium, PhoneGap, Ruby on Rails, Drupal, WordPress,, MongoDB and others;
    • with the benefit of ongoing development by talented developers and now also support from major firms;
    • and providing the security of a large pool of potential developers familiar with the framework or tools in use.
  • Task-appropriate & work-minimizing—
    • technology stacks focused on leveraging existing resources to meet project goals,
    • test-driven development to speed development and ease long-term maintenance,
    • and cloud-based deployment through trusted providers like Amazon Web Services, Heroku, and Rackspace to maintain flexibility.

I graduated with a degree in Social Studies from Harvard University, writing an honors thesis titled Networking Social Theory: Towards a Materialism for the Digital Age. I have worked in web strategy and development since doing so.

Before beginning work as an independent contractor, I was employed as Director of Social Technology at SnapDragon Consultants and worked with clients that included federal agencies and Fortune 500 companies. My current work tends to focus on mobile, location-based, and real-time development projects for local (New York City) clients.

I write about web service APIs for Programmable Web, an Internet technology industry site operated by Alcatel-Lucent. An archive of my contributions can be found here.
